About Us
The Great Spirit Center is a non-profit, public benefit charity committed to helping single parents with dependent children to begin a new and productive lifestyle by providing education, job training, skills, and placement, along with helping them regain self esteem, and become a productive citizen through a carefully planned 2 year support system which includes transitional & permanent housing, along with life's basic necessities.
Each single parent must agree to take early childhood and adolescent behavior classes, along with financial budgeting courses. As an extra incentive to step into the workplace, each single parent is given self esteem, diet/nutrition, and rejuvination classes to create and boost their confidence. Upon completion a wardrobe is presented to them so that he/she will not feel uncomfortable in the new job.
How does the program work?
-A volunteer social worker interviews the prospective client, taking the necessary information to investigate the situation and circumstances of the client. A file is then made and evaluated.
-After a thorough investigation, and upon finding that the client has been truthful, a wish list is required which contains the needs and dreams of what it would take to make a better life for him/her and their family.
-Our staff works one to one. Every case is individual and the goal is to provide the needs for a change to a position that will allow the client to function and demonstrate at his/her highest ability, to become productive. This generally takes up to two years.
What about the children?
-The children from 6 months to 5 years attend either a child care center or a licensed child care sitter. From 5 years to 18 years, we network with other agencies, activity centers, and centers of interest which promote growth, in social etiquette, self discipline, integrity and respect for mankind.
Who can qualify for this program?
-Single Parents with children, who want to get out of poverty and off of welfare. They must make a two year committment to attend school, classes, seminars, and job training courses. They must try to help themselves by working part time, and or attending school. This is NOT a Welfare Program! This is a Self Help program for those who want and deserve a New Start!
-A drug/alcohol test is given randomly and we do not accept a client who has those habits.
What
does the great spirt center provide?
-THE GREAT SPIRIT CENTER feels it a priviledge to be able to bring hope
and a new beginning to people who want to become productive and get out
of poverty. THIS IS NOT A WELFARE SYSTEM, but rather a comprehensive,
LIFE REJUVENATION EXPERIENCE, and support system that actually stays
with the client until stability is established. Because life is so
complex, we have found that it is necessary to replace old habits, with
new ideas that help to achieve the results which bring about the state
of success.
-So, we work with changing a lifestyle through providing first, the basic needs of adequate housing, furniture, housewares, food, clothing and transportation, and child care, so the client will be more able to learn. Then we offer classes in financial planning and money management. To build self esteem, we teach diet/nutrition/weight loss/gain, the value of exercise and how to stop smoking. (We do not deal with drug/alcohol- we send them to other agencies.) Groceries are provided weekly, clothing, furniture, personal health items (including vitamins), job related items, as needed, and motivational counseling.
